Pubs Lost or under threat
In December 2022 we were notified that the Wheatsheaf in, Stanwell, which has been closed for some time, has now been granted planning permission by Spelthorne Council for demolition and replacement by houses and flats. Following lots of postponements permission was granted on 30th June 2023.
On 20th January 2024 we were notified by member Bob that the Compasses in Egham Hythe had closed. Landlord Adam Garrett who had been there for 16 years (one of his bar staff been there for 22yrs) handed back the keys to the Pubco. Planning permission for demolition and housing development was refused for technical reasons (flood risk) but what will happen next?
On 2nd January 2023 local member Martin notified us that the Ash Tree in Ashford had closed. Despite 206 letters of objection to plans to replace with a Sainsbury's Local, permission was granted on 4th April 2024. Well done Spelthorne Borough Council, another community asset lost.
On 24th August 2024, the Feathers in Laleham was reported to be boarded up, and stlll is. If anyone knows any more, please Contact Branch.
On 26th October 2024, Nikki & John at the Rose & Olive Branch in Virginia Water, stated they would be closing on Christmas Day due to unviable rising running costs. This is really sad news as they have made a real effort since re-opening this cosy country pub after a period of closure. Pub owner says he plans to keep premises going as a pub, presumably with new tenants, so if anyone hears anything please Contact Branch.
Action: As a Branch we always put in an objection, with limited impact. One thing we can all do, is visit our local pubs.
